I have been blogging so much about autism and being autistic, it seems that I’ve forgotten the real purpose behind this blog: food! Obviously, my autism affects how I eat, but I also want to make sure that you guys have a chance to try one of my recipes. Now, this won’t be a completely “normal” recipe, and is not completely from scratch. April also officially rings in Autism Awareness Month (AAW), which itself brings both amazing opportunities for advocacy, but also an intense lack of information and understanding. This is the month where social media and brands become flooded with puzzle pieces, blue motifs, and quotes from Autism Speaks, the nation’s forefront “autism advocacy and support” foundation.

Questioning Your Neurotypicality? Read This.

Growing up as a little girl and ultimately being socialized as a woman, all of my autistic traits were overlooked. When I began questioning my status as a neurotypical individual, a lot of people shot me down as well. As a woman, we are expected to be more submissive in social situations, have special interests, and be “sensitive” to certain things. A lot of autistic traits are characteristics that society broadly applies to women in general. That made it incredibly difficult to convince the right people that I needed to be evaluated.
